California Pilgrimage, 2024
In the 1970s, my mum lived in LA for a couple of years for her musical pursuit. Getting dissatisfied with the classical music world, she moved to LA after selling all her valuables including her pianos and making up her mind that she would not return to her native country.
After decades of hearing of stories of her LA life, I found myself having a connection with LA: the parents of my partner have moved to LA from Las Vegas. I decided to make a visit to the city where my mum spent her youthful time with curiosity and fearlessness.
While the community seemed to have changed and now it’s a neibourhood of first generation Chinese immigrants, the house she lived was there. Mum was surprised that I actually visited the site and her small shack was still standing.
